Bio
Nate Orton currently resides in Portland, Oregon and is best known for his self-published book series, MY DAY, established in 2005, which explores the people and landscapes of the Pacific Northwest through drawing, writing and traditional as well as non-traditional printing and printmaking techniques. Nate regularly walks his city with sketchbook in tow documenting the common yet sometimes surreal scenes and situations he stumbles upon. Taking inspiration from Claude Flight and the Grosvenor School’s pragmatic views of art production and art sales, he believes modern artist’s techniques, tools and materials should be accessible to everyone and art prints and books should be purchased at prices similar to a trip to the movies. Nate’s work lives in collections as small as Portland’s local independent book shops to as large as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York city.
Statement
My artwork is about documenting scenes and stories from my city and its hinterlands. This journalistic devotion allows me to explore my community residents, history, and aesthetics by drawing and painting open-air whenever I leave my house. Once back in my studio, I take my small drawings and make them into books, paintings, prints, collages and maps in the hopes to better understand the places that I live and work in.
